What the evidence says
The study, led by Mary Brushe and published in JAMA Pediatrics on 4 March 2024, followed 220 Australian families from the Language in Little Ones cohort, recording children at 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months between 2018 and 2021. Rather than relying on parent recall, children wore a small recorder that captured a full day of audio, analysed with Language Environment Analysis, or LENA, software. Researchers manually reviewed the audio segments the software flagged as electronic noise to identify which were screens specifically, then measured three things: how many words adults spoke near the child, how often the child vocalised, and how many conversational turns, meaning back-and-forth exchanges, occurred. At 36 months, each additional minute of screen time was associated with 6.6 fewer adult words, 4.9 fewer child vocalisations, and 1.1 fewer conversational turns, after adjusting for other factors, with a similar pattern visible from 18 months onward.
For context
Measuring actual sound rather than parent estimates is a genuine strength, but the method still has edges: audio-only coding can miscategorise electronic sounds that are not screens, or miss a screen playing silently in the background, and some recordings from the later timepoints happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, though the researchers note screen time in that period looked similar to earlier estimates. This is an association, not proof that screen time itself blocks conversation; it is equally possible that busier or more stressed households turn to both more screen time and less talk for reasons the recordings cannot see. What the study adds is a plausible mechanism worth naming directly: screen time and conversation appear to compete for the same minutes in a young child's day.
A practical next step
One option is to treat certain windows, such as the car, bath time or the walk to childcare, as reliably screen-free, on the reasoning that protecting a few talk-rich moments may matter more than the total daily count.
