Toddlers learn less from video than from a live equivalent

A 2005 review found toddlers consistently learn less from video than from an equivalent live demonstration, known as the video deficit effect.

The short answer

Toddlers reliably learn less from a video demonstration than from watching the same demonstration happen live in front of them. That gap, often called the video deficit effect, is one of the most consistently replicated findings about very young children and screens, and it is a reasonable starting point for judging any claim that a video is "educational" for a baby.

What the evidence says

A 2005 review by Daniel Anderson and Tiffany Pempek in American Behavioral Scientist, Television and Very Young Children, examined the research available against the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation that children under 24 months not be exposed to television. The review's own summary reports "substantially less learning from videos" than from equivalent live presentations, even though very young children pay real, sustained attention to programmes and videos made for them. The review found mixed evidence overall: one study reported a positive association between exposure to certain children's programmes and language learning, while other studies reported negative associations between viewing and language, cognitive and attentional development. A specific study published two years later on infants and toddlers under two, reported in the Journal of Pediatrics, is an example of exactly the kind of negative language association the review was weighing.

For context

A review article summarises a mixed and, at the time, still developing literature; it is not itself a new experiment, and the review's own authors conclude only that the AAP recommendation is "well taken," not proven beyond doubt, adding that considerably more research was needed. The video deficit effect describes a gap in learning efficiency between live and recorded demonstrations of the same content; it is not evidence that video exposure harms a young child, and the review is explicit that some associations in this literature run in a positive direction. The finding also concerns very young children specifically; it does not extend this comparison to older preschoolers.

A practical next step

Because live demonstration appears to teach very young children more efficiently than an equivalent video, it can be worth treating an in-person version of an activity as the default and a video version as a supplement, rather than the reverse.

  • Could this specific skill be shown to a young child live instead of on a screen?
  • Is a marketing claim about a baby video based on a comparison with live teaching, or with no comparison at all?
  • Does a young child's attention to a screen mean they are learning from it, or simply watching it?

The video deficit effect does not mean screens teach very young children nothing; it means the same content usually teaches them less than a live equivalent does, a distinction worth keeping when a product promises to replace, rather than support, in-person interaction.
